Dr Mark Cutifani CBE
Chair of the Global Advisory Council
Mark Cutifani was Chief Executive of Anglo American from 2013- 2022, and currently acts as special adviser to the new Chief Executive. He has more than 45 years of broad experience of projects, operations, marketing, business development and finance.
Mark has considerable experience in mining, having been associated with the industry since 1976 and has a practical working knowledge of most of the commodities produced and sold across the globe. He has had line experience and responsibility for mining and industrial businesses across six continents. Prior to joining Anglo American, he held the position of Chief Executive Officer at AngloGold Ashanti based in South Africa, and before that he was the Chief Operating Officer for Inco and then Vale’s global Nickel business, based in Canada. Prior to his Vale role he held senior executive positions with the Normandy Group, Sons of Gwalia, Western Mining Corporation, Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines and CRA.
Mark was until recently also the Chairman of De Beers Group of Companies and a non-Executive Director of Anglo American Platinum Limited. Mark continues as a non-executive director of Total SA. He is currently the Chair of Vale Base Metals.
Ms Sharan Burrow AC
Deputy Chair of the Global Advisory Council
Sharan Burrow is a global advocate for human and labour rights, climate action and Just Transition. She is the former General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation 2010-2022. Previously, she was President of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) from 2000-2010.
Sharan is well known for her international advocacy on labour standards, corporate responsibility, climate action with just transition, investment in infrastructure and the green economy, investment in the care economy, women, equality and diversity, global migration and employment.
She has represented workers in civil society groups in global policy discussions in United Nations bodies, on the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization as well as at the tables of the G7, G20, World Bank, and International Monetary Fund.
Sharan is currently a visiting professor in practice at the LSE, a board member of the European Climate foundation, a co-chair of the IEA Labour Council, Deputy Chair of the B Team, a member of the Commission on Global Climate Governance and chair of the Curtin Institute for Energy Transition.
