The Global Foundation’s Australia-China Strategic Partnership
For the past decade, the Foundation has nurtured its Australia-China Strategic Partnership, involving members and other stakeholders, including governments of both nations in a constant stream of two-way engagement, promoting the strategic partnership and a successful long-term relationship, not just bilaterally and economically, but also globally, on matters ranging from regional prosperity and stability, to global energy security and climate change responses. Global engagement is central to the Foundation’s work and a key theme of its Australia Unlimited 2010 program.

The Global Foundation convened and hosted a delegation from the China Foundation for Human Rights Development led by its Chairman, Mr Huang Mengfu, one of China’s most influential figures from a private sector backgroundRecently from 6-11 April 2010. Mr Huang is also Vice Chairman, National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Chairman, All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce.
The China Foundation for Human Rights Development has a broad development brief which includes improving the economic conditions of the Chinese population and securing a viable economic future for millions of Chinese.
The program of meetings in Sydney and Melbourne involved meetings with the Governors of Victoria and New South Wales, along with leading figures in business, from universities and with human rights representatives. Member organisations of the Foundation hosted formal lunches and dinners for the delegation in both Melbourne and Sydney and the program of activities in those cities involved over 100 members of the Foundation, including a number of younger Chinese-speaking Australians who will be key to the relationship going forward.

Australia-China Strategic Partnership 2009 held in Sydney on 23 November, 2009
The Foundation and The Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) held an Australia-China Strategic Partnership meeting in Sydney on 23 November 2009. The Chinese delegation was lead by My Zheng Xinli, Vice-Chairman, Economics Sub Committee, National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC). Addresses to Global Summit, Beijing, July 2009
As part of the Foundation’s broader engagement with China, the Foundation’s Chair, The Hon Warwick Smith AM, and Secretary, Mr Steve Howard, addressed the inaugural Global Think Tank Summit in Beijing in July 2009, convened by the China Centre for International Economic Exchanges. Among other matters, the Foundation called for closer ties between Australia and China and for China to play a stronger role in the operations of the G20. The Addresses are available here.
Clean Energy and Environmental Dialogue held at Beijing in April 2008
In April 2008, the Foundation hosted a Dialogue on Clean Energy and Environment between China and Australia in Beijing which was joined by The Hon Kevin Rudd MP, Prime Minister of Australia, Mr Xie Zhenhua, Vice Chairman, National Development and Reform Commission, People’s Republic of China, The Hon Senator Penny Wong, Minister for Climate Change and Water and attended by Chinese and Australian representatives from the corporate sector, senior policy-makers, academics as well as representatives from non-government organisations.

US-China-Australia Dialogue on Energy Security and Climate Change, Washington, September 2008
Following the success of the Dialogue, in cooperation with the China Institute of International Studies and the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, the Foundation co-presented the US-China-Australia Dialogue on Energy Security and Climate Change in September 2008 in Washington, with participants and speakers including Ambassadors, senior officials, private sector members and key think-tank personnel from Australia, China and the US. 2006 Mission to the People's Republic of China
The Global Foundation mounted a working mission to China from Wednesday 20 - 24 April 2006, visiting Beijing and attending the Boao Forum. The purpose of the mission was to strengthen Australia-China Strategic Partnership and understanding, through a series of individual meetings and briefings and attendance at the Boao Forum. The 2006 delegation intersected with the visit to China by the Australian Prime Minister.
Earlier delegations to and from China
These activities follow The Global Foundation leading delegations to China in 2004 and 2005 with all visits incorporating attendance at the Boao Forum for Asia, the latter at the invitation of Mr Long Yongtu, Secretary General, Boao Forum for Asia. In September 2003, The Global Foundation visited Beijing with a large delegation of business and academic leaders and government policy-makers and partnered with the China Institute of International Studies for a series of individual meetings with an economic and policy focus.
Inaugural Mission to the People's Republic of China
In November 2001, The Global Foundation, at the invitation of the Chinese Government and affiliates, staged a very successful Mission to Beijing, which included the inaugural China-Australia bilateral meeting. The Australian Prime Minister was represented by a Minister on the Mission, which made a useful and timely contribution to the development of relations between the two nations. It was proposed in Beijing that further meetings might be arranged with a view to developing a sustained pattern of engagement and relationship building.
A further China-Australia bilateral meeting was held in 2002 in conjunction with the official visit to Australia by His Excellency Li Peng, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China and accompanying high-level delegation.
